Project Dovetail runs a series of fun days - Kids Day Out - for local disadvantaged children. This is a chance for the kids and their families to take a day out and enjoy the fact that they are kids! This event is run by the reigning Mrs Australia Globe each year.
In December 2010 Project Dovetail hosted its first WA Kids Day Out at Orana Cinemas in Busselton. The day was designed to be a part fundraiser, part sponsorship, with half of the tickets being sold to local families and the other half given to local children who would have otherwise been unable to attend. It was through both the profits from the sale of tickets as well as direct sponsorship, we were able to cover the costs for our sponsored children and their parent or guardian to have a day out to remember.
The afternoon saw children and families arrive to have their faces painted, play games and do puzzles before a pre-release screening of Megamind was shown. Children were treated to popcorn, soft drink and chocolates and were given a show bag to take home which included lollies, colouring in and water thanks to event sponsor Saka Water.
The event was organised by Mrs Philanthropy 2010 Holly Cowley whose aims were to give back to those in need within her community. The children invited to come along were selected with the help of school chaplaincy services, DCP and word of mouth. Holly describes the event as a success with things on the day running smoothly. we had a few hiccups in the lead up to the event, especially with having the rights to show a pre-release screening for the film, but it came together really well and is definitely something I will host again. It was so rewarding to see the childrens faces light up as they played with their balloon sculptures in the foyer before the film.
" Thank you for a fantastic day at the circus. if it were not for the 'Kids Day Out 'our family would never have been able to have this experience "
'Helping to create happy
childhood memories'
Project Dovetail held its first Kids Day Out in Victoria, with thanks to Mrs Australia 2009 Kylie Tsiafogiannis and Silvers Circus.
Project Dovetail gave 50 tickets for disadvantaged children and their parents to attend a fun filled day, which included popcorn, drinks, rides and a session of the circus.
To fund the event, a fashion parade and cocktail party was held at Red Love bar, and all proceeds went to the Kids Day Out, giving the children a fun day out that would not have been made possible without Project Dovetail.
The children had a great time, and especially loved being able to meet the performers at the end of the show.
