Project Mauritius was Project Dovetails first International Project. We worked along side SOS childrens village in Beau Bassin Mauritius, to plan activities, visits and a party to celebrate the 97 children!
SOS Beau Bassin, is part of the international SOS childrens villages, an organisation that promotes the children to live in a family environment. Here, they offer a substitute family to abandoned, neglected and poor children regardless of their religion and race.
As well as offering long-term residential for children with no biological families to take proper care of them, SOS offers a family strengthening Program. It is a right-based programme that addresses the root causes of child abandonment in Mauritius by empowering families to properly care after their children.
Project Dovetail is supporting SOS Beau Bassin, as we strongly believe that every child has the right to be loved and cared for and supports organisations and homes that work to ensure the children in their care are treated with dignity and respect.
The children in the care of SOS Beau Bassin, have suffered varying extents of psychological trauma due to different forms of violence neglect, child abuse, poverty physical and emotional harm. Many long for one on one attention and things to call their own.
We spent a week in Mauritius, visiting the children and organising everything for the Party Day, and purchased as much as we could from the local community.
We organised a care package selected especially for each of the children including a new outfit, a pair of thongs, pj's, underwear, socks and a toy.
For everyone to share we purchased art and craft supplies, games, sports gear and 70 new books for the library.
Project Dovetail also sponsored the annual village camp, which enabled all of the children and carers to go for beach holiday for three days, relax and be spoilt! We are proud to support the camp which gives the village something to look forward to in the summer school holidays and have pledged to continue supporting the camp in 2011.
